ntro to Esk Valley Pinot Gris –Esk Valley Pinot Gris from Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. Gordon Russell, the winemaker, has produced another star with this wine. It has aromas and taste of peaches and honey, pineapple and spice.
Full tasting note and wine making –Esk Valley Pinot Gris from Hawkes Bay is a full bodied style of Pinot Gris with a hint of residual sugar to balance the natural acidity. Barrel fermentation in seasoned barriques has provided the wine with rich aromas and flavours of citrus, stone fruit, honey and pears are evident and a hint of spice adds complexity.Each vineyard was harvested in the morning while cool, and the grapes were pressed as quickly as possible to retain freshness. After settling, the juice was fermented in a mix of tanks and seasoned oak barriques and then left on yeast lees until blending and bottling.In New Zealand, Pinot Gris is rapidly gaining ground on Sauvignon Blanc in terms of popularity. This richly aromatic style, with its exotic fruit aromas and flavours has so much going on in the glass that its easy to see why that might be.
